Mrs. Andersen, Grade 7 teacher at RL Angus, describes a recent visit to FNSS that made chemistry a little more exciting than usual:
“Our Grade 7 class went to FNSS to use the lab. We were learning about physical versus chemical changes. The purpose of our activity was to learn about evidence of chemical changes through three different demonstrations. The methane mamba was the third experiment we did as a class.
The contraption was set up and soap and water was poured into the half of a pop bottle. When the methane gas was turned on, the methane gas flows into the pop bottle and causes the soap to bubble. The methane gas is what gets trapped in the bubbles.
When we bring the lighter in contact with the bubbles, the methane gas in the bubbles ignite! We witnessed evidence of chemical reaction: odour, temperature change, formation of a gas, change of reactants to products.”
